Self-harm is an uneasy topic. Stop worrying about having all the answers. This training teaches you how to maintain your professional boundaries while providing a compassionate, safe space for clients to share their struggles, ensuring they feel heard rather than judged.

  • No entry requirement

This training focuses on the “First Response”—what to say and do in those critical moments:

  • Moving Past the Taboo: Understanding why self-harm happens (as a coping mechanism) so you can approach the client with curiosity instead of shock.
  • The “Right” Words: Practical scripts and opening phrases to start the conversation without making the client feel “watched” or “policed.”
  • Validation vs. Reinforcement: How to ensure a client feels heard and supported without accidentally encouraging the behavior.
  • The Boundary Balance: How to stay empathetic without taking the client’s pain home with you. Learn where your role ends and the clinician’s role begins.
  • Risk vs. Safety: Identifying the “Red Flags” that indicate a shift from self-harm to suicidal intent, and knowing exactly who to call when the risk increases.

Students must attend the training session.

By the end of this 60-minute intensive, you will be able to:

  1. Initiate a calm, professional conversation about self-harm indicators.
  2. Apply the “L-E-A-R-N” framework (Listen, Empathize, Assess, Refer, Next Steps).
  3. Document the conversation accurately for clinical records while maintaining the client’s dignity.
  4. Differentiate between self-injury and suicidal ideation to ensure the correct level of intervention.
  5. Certificate of Attainment.
