Administering PRN medication is one of the most serious responsibilities a support worker carries. It is not just about following a label; it’s about clinical judgment, ethical care, and knowing when a “chemical solution” might be masking a deeper problem.

This 60-minute masterclass teaches support workers how to navigate the complexities of PRN for pain and anxiety, ensuring client safety and preventing long-term dependency.

  • No entry requirement

We move beyond the medication chart to look at the holistic “Etiquette” of PRN administration:

  • The PRN Trap: Understanding how “as needed” can accidentally become a “daily habit,” leading to medication tolerance and physical addiction (especially with anti-anxiety and sedative medications).
  • The “First Response” Toolkit: Learn practical alternative strategies to use before reaching for the medication.
    • Pain Management: Using the 1–10 Pain Scale, heat/cold therapy, and repositioning.
    • Anxiety Management: Environmental changes, sensory tools, and verbal de-escalation.
  • The Elderly & Memory Risk: Special considerations for aged care, including how to spot “double-dosing” and managing clients who may forget they have already taken their PRN.
  • Physical Red Flags: Identifying the side effects of PRN overuse, such as increased falls risk, lethargy, or “rebound” anxiety.
  • Advocacy & Reporting: When and how to raise concerns with a GP or Health Professional if you believe the PRN plan is no longer effective or safe.

Students must attend the training session.

By the end of this 60-minute session, you will be able to:

  1. Evaluate a client’s need for PRN using objective tools (Pain Scales and Behavior Logs).
  2. Implement at least three non-chemical interventions for pain and distress.
  3. Document PRN administration with the clinical accuracy required by NDIS and Aged Care standards.
  4. Recognize the signs of medication dependency and “tolerance build-up.”
  5. Certificate of attainment on completion
