The unit is designed for individuals working in the health and community services sectors who need the skills to identify hazardous manual tasks and complete them safely. This training equips you to reduce the risk of injury by applying correct manual handling techniques and adhering to workplace health and safety standards.

  • Student must be 18 years and over
  • 2 hours of hands-on practical training (face-to-face workshop)

  • Self-paced learning with assessments to complete in your own time

Students must attend the training session.

By completing this unit, you will gain the knowledge and practical ability to:

  • Follow workplace procedures to safely prepare for and complete at least three different manual tasks relevant to your role
  • Participate in workplace consultation processes to improve manual handling practices
  • Apply WHS regulations and national codes of practice related to manual tasks
  • Understand the responsibilities of employers and employees in maintaining safe workplaces
  • Contribute to risk management processes by identifying hazards such as repetition, force, posture, vibration, and systems of work
  • Recognise common manual task risks and the types of injuries they can cause
    Understand the human body’s relationship to manual handling, including:

    • Basic functions of the spine
    • Body postures
    • Muscle groups
    • Principles of levers

  • Apply safe manual handling techniques, including:
    • Preparing the environment and load (or client)
    • Using stronger leg muscles rather than spinal muscles
    • Maintaining a neutral spine while lifting and carrying
    • Keeping loads close to the body’s centre of gravity
    • Avoiding twisting movements by repositioning feet
    • Minimising repetitive actions and awkward positions
    • Using two hands when lifting or carrying
    • Limiting tasks above shoulder height

  • Use mechanical aids, tools, and equipment effectively to support safe practice

Assessment for this unit includes both written and practical tasks. Learners will be required to demonstrate their competency in a simulated or workplace setting, showing they can apply safe manual task techniques in line with industry standards.
